It’s just with the finish so it actually starts to fall apart, nevertheless slap-right up finale rescues they in the ‘red’. Admirably staged and you can wisely dialogued, it will have no high issue inside the lifestyle off their incredibly unappealing label.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Flick Bulletin told you “The movie actions from the a quick rate, this new talk is actually advanced and you will characterisations generally effective. Cobb), and a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose sister (Nina Foch) worked in the casino and dated good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh caustically epigrammatic program, the brand new cast’s suavely controlled body gestures regarding like and you can danger, and you can Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you may stylishly assertive photos (including their governmental conscience) get this to pugnacious yet intricate spectacle an invisible classic of category.” [ 10 ]

While the spot uses a common pattern, the characterizations are fresh and the shows suitable in order to overbalance. Dialogue try terse and you can relevant, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney touch. Uncommon digital camera basics come-along occasionally to help you escalate appeal and you may briefly stop the eye. It is generally a question of enjoying Mr. Powell proceed through his paces fashionably while you are an enormous cast from stars and you may actresses bring your standard assistance. Evelyn Keyes takes on the favorable absolutely nothing lady just who brings out the fresh new best in your and Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and you can slinky vixen which becomes your to the jams. Thomas Gomez was oily just like the villain and Lee J. Cobb really does a different able tour since a tired police inspector who fundamentally closes the scenario. Many sipping and you may puffing is performed from the all worried.” [ several ]
